Project Overview

At Pacific Place in Hong Kong, the dining level on Level 4 includes a fine-dining restaurant called The Continental, distinguished by an expressive ETFE skylight. Part of a renovation of the 1980s-era shopping centre at the base of four towers, this project replaced older pyramid skylights with a single, organically shaped ETFE element that floods the interior with natural light and supports daytime terrace functions.

The Story of the Project

ETFE Skylight for Daylit Fine Dining

At Pacific Place in Hong Kong, the dining level on Level 4 includes a fine-dining restaurant called The Continental, distinguished by an expressive ETFE skylight. Part of a renovation of the 1980s-era shopping centre at the base of four towers, this project replaced older pyramid skylights with a single, organically shaped ETFE element that floods the interior with natural light and supports daytime terrace functions.

Light-Filled Space Under an ETFE Skylight

Designed in collaboration with Heatherwick Studio, the skylight is fashioned from a single ETFE cushion shaped like an ink-splatter, integrated into a swirling folded steel ceiling. Its unique form complements the organic design language of the restaurant while preserving daylight access to the interior spaces of the mall and fine-dining areas.

Engineering and Installation Precision

Because the skylight is formed from one large ETFE cushion, a trial inflation was carried out ahead of installation to ensure fit and performance. This preparatory work simplified on-site assembly and helped achieve a smooth, efficient installation on location.

Performance and Ambience

The transparent ETFE cushion maintains a bright internal environment throughout the day, enhancing the atmosphere of the restaurant and adjacent public areas. Its lightweight nature enabled a minimal supporting steel structure, making it suitable for a rooftop terrace conversion while keeping structural loads low.
