AIS Early Learning Village in Singapore uses 3,000 m² of ETFE canopies to shelter outdoor play, learning and pool spaces with UV protection and daylight control.

The AIS Early Learning Village in Singapore was developed through a collaboration between Stamford American International School and Australian International School, opening in July 2017. At the heart of the campus are ETFE canopy systems that protect outdoor play, learning areas and a swimming pool from the intense tropical sun and rain.

The ETFE roofs were introduced early in the design process to provide weather shelter while allowing natural daylight to reach the spaces below. These canopies help reduce heat and provide important UV protection for children at play, creating safer and more comfortable outdoor areas for everyday use.
Design, Engineering and Execution

Vector Foiltec Asia Pacific was responsible for the design, supply and installation of the ETFE canopy systems. The project covers 3,000 m² of ETFE, arranged in two-layer cushions with a printed outer layer that helps control solar heat gain and daylight transmission. The print pattern also gives the roof a distinctive visual character. In addition to the ETFE system itself, Vector Foiltec Asia Pacific engineered the supporting steelwork and handled the necessary government submissions for the structural elements.

The campus was designed by international and local architects with input from environmental psychologists and early learning specialists, highlighting the value of outdoor play in early childhood development. Bogle Architects led the design, with local partner A61 and main contractor Lend Lease in Singapore. The architecture aims to support positive learning and development by integrating covered outdoor spaces into daily routines.
