The Singapore National Stadium, centerpiece of the Singapore Sports Hub, is an architectural and engineering milestone. With a 312-meter span, it holds the title of the largest free-spanning dome in the world. At its core is a remarkable innovation: a moveable ETFE roof system designed to adapt, respond, and perform in a challenging tropical climate.
Designed for Singapore’s Climate
In a location where heat, humidity, and rainfall are constant factors, material performance must go beyond standard specifications. The ETFE system was engineered to regulate solar gain, improve energy efficiency, and maintain indoor comfort, all while withstanding the intense tropical conditions.
Flexible by Design: A Moveable Roof with Purpose

The ETFE roof by day functions as a LED screen by night.
The stadium’s retractable roof comprises two sections, each nearly 10,000 m².
These elements glide across the dome’s surface using an advanced sliding mechanism.
To accommodate the structural deformation caused by movement and gravity, each section is supported by flexible connections, enabling safe and efficient transitions between open and closed positions.
To enhance climate control and aesthetics, a custom print pattern was developed to reduce direct sunlight and provide optimal conditions for LED projection mapping.

To enhance climate control and aesthetics, a custom print pattern was developed to reduce direct sunlight and provide optimal conditions for LED projection mapping. The result is not only functional shading but also one of the largest LED-integrated roof surfaces in the world, turning the stadium into a glowing landmark after dark.
ETFE’s minimal weight significantly reduced the amount of steel required for the dome’s structure, leading to lower material costs, simplified engineering, and a meaningful reduction in carbon footprint. This lightweight cladding solution directly contributes to the stadium’s sustainability goals.
In recognition of its exceptional architectural and environmental performance, the Singapore National Stadium was awarded Gold at the IOC/IAKS Awards 2017 — honoring global excellence in sports architecture.
