Project Overview

Located in Karawang, West Java, Indonesia, Resinda Park Mall is a major retail and leisure destination featuring cinemas, restaurants, spas, gaming zones and entertainment services. As part of the mall’s development (inaugurated in 2017), Vector Foiltec Asia Pacific designed and installed six ETFE canopies focused on effective climate control strategies to protect visitors from sun, rain and wind.

The Story of the Project

Canopies Engineered for Climate Response

The six custom canopies each measure 20 × 20 m and cover approximately 2,400 m² at the mall’s entrance. Inspired by the idea of “inverted umbrellas,” the ETFE roofs provide shelter while collecting rainwater at the centre, which is then guided down through the supporting columns acting as functional gutters.

Thermal Protection and Visual Identity

The two-layer ETFE system includes partial print patterns on the foil that reduce thermal heat gain from intense sunlight, improving comfort underneath. At night, coloured lighting integrated with the canopy structure gives the mall a distinctive visual presence and identity for visitors arriving after dark.

The ETFE system was selected for its resilience in challenging weather conditions, providing protection from strong winds and monsoons while maintaining daylight transmission and reducing reliance on artificial light. These qualities make it well-suited to tropical climates like Indonesia’s.
