Project Overview

The KL Gateway Mall at the entrance to Kuala Lumpur features a prominent atrium roof system by Vector Foiltec Asia Pacific. The central Piazza – linking landscaped gardens, retail areas, a leisure park, and outdoor tropical green zones – is covered by a translucent ETFE roof that transforms the space into a protected, light-filled public zone.

The Story of the Project

ETFE Atrium for Light, Comfort and Architectural Character

The ETFE roof uses a unique print pattern on the foil cushions, inspired by the petals of the hibiscus – Malaysia’s national flower. This design gives the atrium an atmospheric effect: standing beneath it feels like being under a large, abstract flower. The printed pattern helps modulate daylight, adding aesthetic character while managing light and shade.

Efficient Engineering with Lightweight ETFE

The ETFE roof uses a unique print pattern on the foil cushions, inspired by the petals of the hibiscus.

Covering about 1,600 m², the atrium uses 31 two-layer ETFE cushions, all supported on a single-beam steel structure – a 42-metre span achieved without heavy trusses.

The lightweight nature of ETFE enables such an elegant, minimal supporting structure, reducing material use and structural bulk while preserving openness.

Comfort, Acoustics and Practical Benefits

The ETFE system provides a sheltered yet open environment – letting in light while protecting from sun and rain. According to the project description, ETFE offers acoustic comfort as well, an important factor for community and retail spaces where sound control enhances user comfort and atmosphere.
